GE2020: Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong retires from politics

Former prime minister Goh Chok Tong will not be running in the country's upcoming general election. The 79-year-old announced that he will be stepping down from politics. Mr Goh has spent 44 years as a member of Parliament. Tributes from other politicians have poured in. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat expressed appreciation for Mr Goh's "wise counsel" during the 2009 global financial crisis, when they worked together at the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Marine Parade grassroots advisor Tan Chuan-Jin called Mr Goh a "great mentor" who had given the Marine Parade team space to work while developing their own strengths.
